Meals

Summerhill’s Little Treasures recognises the importance of healthy eating and a balanced and nutritious diet so, the setting will endeavour to make a variety of foods available including; meat, vegetarian and vegan options, plenty of fruit and low fat and low sugar food. Sandwiches can be made with either brown or white bread, depending on a child’s preference.

The food provided by Summerhill’s Little Treasures is intended to help promote a healthy child and so, foods that contain sugar, both natural and manufactured are not excluded from the menu, but are eaten in moderation.

Fresh drinking water is freely available to children throughout the day and all children are encouraged and reminded about the provision of water after outdoor play, medication and frequently during periods of hot weather.

Other drinks that are offered at snack and meal times are semi-skimmed cow’s milk.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

At the time of admission, the setting requires that the parents and carers give any information about any special dietary requirements or allergies the child suffers from, along with their food and drink preferences. The management team and staff will ensure that food and drink offered to children takes account of this information to safeguard their health, and meet – as far as possible – their particular preferences. Parents/carers should inform the setting in writing immediately of any change in the child’s dietary requirements.

Food is prepared each day on the premises by a trained cook. Both the cook and staff are aware and have received training in food allergies and intolerance guidance.

CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY

The setting and its staff are committed to embracing the cultural and religious diversity of the families who use our services. The management team and staff will work with parents/carers to ensure that any particular dietary requirements are met.

The setting is also keen to help introduce children to different religious and cultural festivals and events through different types of food and drink sessions.

PACKED LUNCHES

Should parents wish to provide cold lunches for their child (packed lunch) they should be labelled and stored appropriately.

Food not eaten in a packed lunch will be taken home by the child to ensure that parents know what their child has or has not eaten.

The setting will not reheat food provided from home.
